Indigenous people, also referred to as First Nations, Aboriginals, or Native people, are defined as societies and populations who inhabit a region or area prior to the arrival of non-indigenous people or colonization. The rights, institutions, and cultures of these communities have often been unrecognized, overpowered, and even alienated. Over time, indigenous peoples have been dispossessed from their traditional lands and neglected by governments. As a result, these communities are often plagued with disproportionate levels of poverty, inadequate access to education, and health care, and a range of other socio-economic challenges.
